Dec. 13th, 2007 @ 09:00 pm PLEASE READ
I'm in the early stages of planning to start a photography business. This is the research stage, where I gather word of mouth info.
My education involves a Writing and New Media Technologies diploma, where I first was introduced to the camera and photoshop. Since then, I've been creating all manner of art and I've excelled at my photoshopping skills enough that I think I might have a service to offer. This after looking around at a tremendous amount of crap that people actually pay for.
Until demand dictates that I limit my services, I thought about offering everything I can do, including:
Photo restoration
Family portraits
Personal portraits
Animal portraits.
Photoshop services that essentially equate to art, as I assume alot of people might want something different. This is, infact, where I thought I would drum up the most business.

I live around Edmonton Alberta, Canada, if that's of any consequence?

What I need are testimonials and advise from anyone that might have some. Is there anyone in the business that might shine a flashlight on this newcomers path?
How might I best advertise?
Should I stop dreaming until I get a business degree?
Should I limit my services?
Will I not be taken seriously without a diploma in photography on my wall?
What should I include in my portfolio?
Do you have advise on how I might individualize my business, or do you think trying to stand out is wrong?

ANY advise you have will be taken very seriously, provided it's intented that way.

Thanks in advance,
Jerry

a great way to market your business cheaply and effectively, and generate a LOT of hits in just a few days...

http://www.stumbleupon.com

Using the browser plugin, users select categories of sites they're interested in seeing and are randomly directed to websites all over the place based on their choices. The sites I've submitted have started generating 100+ hits / day and quite a few leads. This is a great way to get your name out there and get people to visit your website without spending a lot of advertising $$$!

hey, ok yes i am just joining this community but i am about to advertise something =p but it isnt for my benefit honestly. Im working for ReflexStock.com which is a stock photography company in ireland and the kinda main interest is selling images that are partnered with getty images. Ive had a few brain storming meetings with my boss... telling him we should set it up to sell our own images, our own brand, people associated with us. And we got onto a conversation about how we dont just want stock photos, like there is a big market for graphics, icons and web interfaces and presentations. Its really difficult to get into this kind of thing especially for selling, soooo im trying to convince him artists are interested in submitting their work and what not, especially if a job opportunity could be involved. (i got into this to be a photographer and got landed with the arduous task of advertising, which makes me sad. i just wanted to take photos... soooo) I am trying to get more involved with the photography and art management. I should probably be targeting people who would be interested in purchasing images but im doin it for us struggling student types that cant get a break! I have a community 01reflexstock which is where i was hoping people would join and submit work. =)

Oct. 15th, 2006 @ 08:33 pm My Business
I guess, as suggested, it would be good to detail what my business would be.

I'm planning an online business for beading and scrapbooking. I'm also going to include a few products that I have seen that I think are awesome in their own right.

I'm financing this venture with my part-time evening job. I want a job that I can work at home from, rather than have to go to work in the evening. I'd much rather be at home.

My website is under development. I'm going to hopefully have that up by next month. I am selling things that I like and think that other people will.

Any ideas on how to market a website? Is there something I should know about a home business like this?

Please let me know. Thanks!
